Backpack Assist Ministry

Carlene Benson

Mission Statement :
Our mission is to make Jesus known to the families in our communities. We believe that the Holy Bible  is the sole inspired written revalation of God to mankind. God is the one and only true living God. He manifests himself through the eternal existence of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Sin has seperated the whole of mankind from God. God through the wealth of his grace sent his Son Jesus into the world through the virgin birth to die for man's forgiveness of sin. Those who seek God's forgiveness through faith alone in Jesus' finished work on the cross will receive eternal life.

Ministry Description :
In 2012 the Union Baptist Association started this program, taking it on from the local school districts because their grant monies had been done away with. Doug Benningfield, pastor of Hickory Valley Baptist Church contacted Carleen Benson about the program and the rest is history. A committee was formed: Becky Brogden, DeLissa Cantrell, Lisa Mackie, Rita England, Joan Belanger, Lyndee Clark, Leighann Lynn, Harlen Simmons and Paul Winchester.

It takes all of us working together to pull this event off! It is truly a blessing to see all area churches work together in unity and purely working together as servants of Christ! We have several different churches, individuals, youth groups, businesses and exhibitors who donate not just in a monetary value, but by volunteering for setup, providing food, stuffing the backpacks, attending the event and cleaning up after the event.

Our committee commits to filling a crate of school supplies designated to each school throughout the year, for when a teacher sees a need.  This event is a tremendous success and we hold all our volunteers and exhibitors responsible, we may not name you but God knows your works! A huge thank you to the Union Baptist Association for funding this program in the beginning, because without your contribution, this program would never have gotten started! Thank you very much for you generosity and support.

In 2012 we were able to help about 800 children. In 2013 we gave out 1100 backpacks and 300 Walmart bags  full of school supplies. Along with the school supplies each bag or backpack  has a Bible included.

                                                                                                    Unity in the Community……With B.A.M. 2014

Sometimes the reaction you get from a community exceeds expectations. On Saturday August 9, 2014 the B.A.M. committee and area Christians, exhibitors, businesses, students, youth groups and churches gave out 1000 backpacks full of school supplies & personal hygiene items to children in White & Van Buren County. It was an awesome event getting our students prepared for their 2014-2015 school year. Our committee members are: Becky Brogden, DeLissa Cantrell, Lisa Mackie, Rita England, Joan Belanger, Lyndee Clark, Leighann Lynn, Carleen Benson, Alisa Farmer, Harlen Simmons and Paul Winchester. A heartfelt thanks to all the wonderful folks who helped make B.A.M. (Backpack Assist Ministry) a huge success! It takes all of us working together to pull this event off! It was truly a blessing to see all area churches work together in unity and purely working together as servants of Christ! We had several different churches, individuals, students, businesses and exhibitors donate not just in a monetary value, but by volunteering for setup, providing food, stuffing the backpacks, attending the event and cleaning up after the event. Our committee commits to filling a crate of school supplies & personal hygiene items designated to each school throughout the year, for when a teacher sees a need. One of our committee members visits an assigned school monthly & fills the crate with supplies. Our event was a tremendous success and we hold all our churches, volunteers, businesses and exhibitors responsible! Some may call Sparta a small town, but we are a community of people who have HUGE GIVING HEARTS! Thank you very much for you generosity and support!
